Our recent trip to Tulum, Mexico, was an adventure filled with scenic drives, vibrant towns, and the discovery of both new and familiar landscapes. Here's a glimpse into our journey and reflections on the contrasts between Tulum and our beloved Chuburna Puerto.
Our journey began with a 3 1/2 hour drive through the heart of the Yucatán Peninsula. As we wound our way through numerous small towns, we were captivated by the charm of local shops and restaurants lining the streets. Each town had its own unique character, offering a glimpse into the everyday life of the region's residents.
We chose to stay in an Airbnb located just outside of Tulum, near the quaint town of Akumal. Nestled in a small, gated community, our Airbnb provided a tranquil retreat. It felt as though we had the entire area to ourselves, a stark contrast to the bustling vibe of Tulum.

One of the highlights of our stay was the direct access to Yal-Ku Lagoon. This serene and stunning lagoon is home to a variety of colorful fish, making it a snorkeler's paradise. While most visitors had to pay to snorkel, our exclusive access allowed us to enjoy this natural wonder for free.
Returning to Tulum, we couldn't help but notice how much it has grown since our last visit. The once quaint town has evolved, offering more amenities and conveniences for tourists. However, this growth has come at a cost. The small-town charm that we once loved is slowly fading, replaced by a more commercial and tourist-driven atmosphere.
The beaches of Tulum remain as beautiful as ever, with their clear blue waters and powdery white sand. However, accessing these beaches has become more challenging due to the proliferation of hotels that restrict entry. While the beaches are undeniably stunning, they are now shared with a much larger crowd.
As we drove back home, we couldn't help but compare our experience in Tulum with life in our cherished Chuburna Puerto. There's nothing inherently wrong with Tulum—it's a vibrant, bustling destination with plenty to offer. However, it's all about personal preference.
For us, Chuburna Puerto's quiet, small-town vibe and unlimited beach access hold a special appeal. The simplicity and tranquility of our beach town are unmatched. Once you step onto the beach, there's a good chance you'll have it all to yourself, a luxury that's increasingly rare in Tulum.
Visiting new places is always an enriching experience, and our trip to Tulum was no exception. We enjoyed the journey, the sights, and the chance to reconnect with a destination we once loved. However, there's something uniquely comforting about returning home to the peaceful embrace of Chuburna Puerto. While Tulum dazzles with its energy and beauty, our hearts remain with the serene shores of our quiet beach town.
